The cooperative research between China and Ireland shows that roof solar photovoltaic power generation has great potential

Recently, cork University published a research report on nature communications to conduct the first global assessment of the potential of roof solar photovoltaic power generation, which has made a useful contribution to the deliberations of the United Nations climate summit. The research was funded by the Ireland China cooperative research program funded by the Irish Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and contributed to the solution of global climate change.

The report provides more evidence that if renewable energy is to be incorporated into the energy structure, roof solar photovoltaic power generation seems to be the main candidate to lead the development of low-carbon future. At present, solar photovoltaic technology has significantly improved the technology of converting solar energy into electric energy. Since 2010, the cost of solar photovoltaic has been reduced by 40-80%. The study found that the total roof area of the world is equivalent to that of the UK. Under the current technical conditions, half of the roof covering the world will be enough to power the earth. In addition to its contribution to climate action, the study also shows that rooftop solar photovoltaic can also play an important role in achieving other sustainable development goals.Considering that 800 million people around the world do not have access to electricity, this highlights the potential of roof solar photovoltaic in increasing global power supply. The study found that Ireland has about 220 square kilometers of roof area, which can meet more than 50% of the current annual total power demand. Ireland's revised climate action and low carbon development act in 2021 requires the formulation of local climate action plans. This study is very timely for Ireland.s revised climate action and low carbon development act in 2021 requires the formulation of local climate action plans.
